    About KOBO
SUNY Poly Women in Engineering (WIE) and the College of Engineering are excited to welcome 11th and 12th grade high school students of all gender identities to shadow current College of Engineering students for our Know One and Be One (KOBO) program.
Know One and Be One affords current high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to experience firsthand the educational requirements to pursue a career in engineering. Selected students are paired with a current SUNY Poly student pursuing a degree program in our College of Engineering. Selected high school students shadow their SUNY Poly hosts for one day, including attending classes, enjoying lunch in our dining center, meeting other SUNY Poly students, and more.

The process is as easy as 1 -2-3!

    1. High school students complete the application form and select a degree program in our College of Engineering that they're interested in exploring.
    2. My team and I pair selected students with a SUNY Poly host who is pursuing that program.
    3. We notify the selected student with their host's information and the date of their KOBO experience.

High school students have the option to shadow current SUNY Poly students in the following majors:

    • Civil Engineering
    • Civil Engineering Technology
    • Computer Engineering Technology
    • Computer Science
    • Electrical & Computer Engineering
    • Electrical Engineering Technology
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering Technology
    • Network and Computer Security: Cybersecurity

    FAQs

Current eleventh and twelfth grade high school students are invited to participate in Know One and Be One (KOBO). Students must be at least 16 years of age to participate in the program, as well. Students who are age 16 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for the duration of their KOBO experience. This includes attending classes with the high school student participant (professors are notified in advance and, in this case, welcome family participation.) Students who are age 17 or older do not need to attend with a parent or legal guardian. All student participants are required to submit a permission slip upon check in for the KOBO expeirence. Please note: we welcome both prospective and accepted students to participate in this experience.

Selected high school students shadow their SUNY Poly hosts for one day. This includes: shadowing a current student in your selected major to all of their classes, enjoying lunch in The Dish, our campus dining center, exploring our campus, connecting with other SUNY Poly students, and meeting SUNY Poly faculty.

All Know One and Be One (KOBO) experiences are hosted at SUNY Poly, located at 100 Seymour Road, Utica, NY 13502. There are 8 date options for students to choose from: February 26 - 29 and March 4 - 8, 2024. Students who attend the KOBO program will be provided with a note for a legal absence, as this is considered a college visit. KOBO days are not offered at any other time.

Students who wish to participate in the Know One and Be One (KOBO) program will indicate their degree program and date preferences in our online application process. This process includes a series of questions about your interests so we can ensure your KOBO experience meets your needs. Due to limited space in the program, some applicants may not be able to be accommodated in this round of the Know One and Be One program. Students are given plenty of advance notice if they have been paired with a current student for a KOBO experience. Please use our online form to apply/sign up:
    Know One and Be One

The deadline for individual students to register for the KOBO experience is Tuesday, January 23, 2024. If you are a school-based counselor or teacher intersted in brining a group of students to KOBO, the deadline to register is Tuesday, January 16, 2024.

Students who sign up to participate in the Know One and Be One (KOBO) program will learn of their placement at least 2 weeks before their scheduled program date. We recommend only preferencing dates listed on the registration form that you know you will be available. If something changes with your availability before you are notified of your placement, please contact Undergraduate Admissions at (315) 792-7208 or admissions@sunypoly.edu.

We are thrilled you're interested in brining a small group of students (maximum of 10) to participate in KOBO. This requires some special planning and logistics, so please contact McKenzie Albrecht, Campus Visit Specialist in Undergraduate Admissions, to connect about next steps in the planning process. McKenzie can be emailed at albrecmj@sunypoly.edu or reached by phone at (315) 792-7208. Please note: we can only accomodate requests to bring a group of students until Tuesday, January 16, 2024. The group must be accompanied by a teacher or counselor from the school for the duration of their visit.

The College of Engineering is just one of four academic colleges at SUNY Polytechnic Institute. It is our largest college and is home to 11 undergraduate degree programs. You can learn more online: College of Engineering.

Please contact McKenzie Albrecht albrecmj@sunypoly.edu and Dr. Joyce Shen via email at shenj@sunypoly.edu.
